🇩🇰 Crypto tax in Denmark
Crypto bought by private individuals is in principle treated as speculation: gains are personal income (taxed at up to 53%), losses are deductible at a value of about 26%. FIFO applies, and gains and losses are generally reported separately (box 20 / box 58).
| When the rules apply | SKAT's starting point is that buying and selling crypto as a private individual is speculation. In case of doubt, SKAT makes an overall assessment of the circumstances (which coin, what it can be used for, why you bought it, etc.). You can ask for a binding ruling.Source quote"When you buy and sell cryptocurrencies as a private individual, this is in principle considered to be speculation." … "In case of doubt, we undertake an overall assessment, taking various circumstances of the purchase into consideration." |

| How gains are taxed | As personal income, without the 8% labour market contribution; can be taxed at up to 53%.Source quote"gains are taxed just like your earned income (but without labour market contributions at 8%) … gains on cryptocurrencies can be taxed at up to 53%." |
| Losses | Deductible at a value equivalent to 26% of the loss.Source quote"Losses are deductible at a rate equivalent to 26% of your losses." |
| Gains vs. losses | As a general rule you may not offset a loss on one transaction against gains on others. Report total gains in box 20 and total losses in box 58.Source quote"you may not deduct a loss from a gain. You must therefore declare the total gains and the total losses in two different boxes" … "Enter gains in box 20. Enter losses in box 58." |
| Exception: one lot sold in stages | If you buy a coin in one lot (none held before), sell it in several stages in the same income year and don't buy more in between, you must net gains and losses on that lot. A net loss is not deductible from personal income but goes in box 58. No netting across different coins.Source quote"you buy 10 Ethereum at the same time and then sell them in several stages within the same income year, you are permitted to offset losses against gains … A net loss may not be deducted from personal income, but must be declared in box 58" |
| Cost-basis method | FIFO per coin, across all your exchanges and wallets (treated as one holding).Source quote"you must calculate gains and losses according to the FIFO (First In First Out) principle … your holdings are deemed to be one single holding." |
| Crypto-to-crypto swaps | Paying for one coin with another is a sale of the first coin.Source quote"you have sold bitcoins to buy ripples. You must therefore also calculate the gain and loss" |
| Expenses | Trading costs directly tied to a specific buy or sell are deductible. Costs of internal wallet transfers and of tax-calculation reports/software are not.Source quote"Expenses relating to internal transfers between, for example, own wallets, and expenses for tax calculation reports etc., are not related to specific cryptocurrency transactions. These expenses are therefore not deductible." |
| Deadline | 1 May of the year after you sold or exchanged crypto.Source quote"The deadline for declaring your results on the tax assessment notice is 1 May of the year after you sold or exchanged cryptocurrency." |
| Stablecoins | Skatterådet's binding answer SKM2025.478.SR: USDC, USDS, USDe and USD0, and the reference tokens sUSDC, sUSDS, sUSDe and USD0++, are taxed as financial contracts (kursgevinstloven §§ 29, 33) on a mark-to-market basis.
